The Foundation of a Legacy in 1898

Kherati Lall Ji Rakyan formalised the family’s jewellery tradition by establishing Kherati Lall & Sons in New Delhi. This step marked a new chapter, transforming a family passion into a recognised business. Under his leadership, the maison earned the prestigious title of official jeweller to the Governor of India. This recognition was not just a title but a testament to the trust and respect the family had earned through their craftsmanship.

The company also secured Delhi’s 51st Export Licence (DK-51) and operated under the telegraph address JEWEL, signalling its serious commercial presence. Their reputation extended well beyond the capital, making Kherati Lall & Sons a name synonymous with quality and reliability.

Showcasing Craftsmanship on the Global Stage

The Rakyan family’s artistry gained international attention at the New York World's Fair in 1964–65. This event provided a platform to display their jewellery and craftsmanship to a global audience. The appreciation they received highlighted the universal appeal of their work and the skill involved in creating pieces that resonated across cultures.

Later, in the 1970s and 1980s, the family represented India at the Osaka World Expo. Selected by the Government of India as the country’s sole representative, they brought Indian craftsmanship to one of the most prestigious international platforms. This opportunity reinforced their role as cultural ambassadors, showcasing the richness of Indian artistry to the world.

Expanding Artistic Horizons with the Janpath Legacy

Shanti Kumar Ji Rakyan recognised a growing interest in cultivated interiors and expanded the family’s artistic language beyond jewellery. He introduced glass and decorative arts into their repertoire, blending traditional craftsmanship with new materials and forms. This shift reflected an understanding of evolving tastes and the desire to create art that complemented refined living spaces.

This period marked a diversification that enriched the family’s offerings and allowed them to reach new audiences. The Janpath Legacy became synonymous with elegance and artistic innovation in interior décor.

The Curator’s Eye: Sharad Rakyan’s Vision

Sharad Rakyan took the family practice further by broadening its scope beyond chandeliers. Under his guidance, the maison embraced bespoke furniture, mirrors, and rare collectables. This expansion transformed the business into a comprehensive creative house, trusted by India’s leading architects, designers, and tastemakers.

Sharad’s approach combined respect for tradition with a contemporary sensibility. His collaborations with design professionals helped integrate the family’s craftsmanship into modern interiors, ensuring relevance and appeal in a changing market.

Together, they carry forward a legacy that balances craftsmanship, connoisseurship, and enduring relationships. Their work respects the past while embracing the future, ensuring the maison remains relevant to a new generation of clients.

This ongoing evolution reflects the family’s commitment to quality and artistry, adapting to contemporary tastes without losing the essence of their heritage.

A Legacy That Transcends Time

The Rakyan family’s story is a powerful example of how dedication to craft can create a lasting impact. From serving royalty and maharajas to creating bespoke glass pieces admired across generations, their work continues to inspire. The evolution of Kherati Lall & Sons shows how tradition and innovation can coexist, producing art that honors history while embracing change.

For those interested in craftsmanship, design, and cultural heritage, the Rakyan family’s journey offers valuable insights. It demonstrates the importance of adapting to new opportunities, expanding creative boundaries, and maintaining strong relationships with clients and collaborators.
